For decades the Mattoon Area Family YMCA has been an important resource for nurturing the potential of area youth and improving the health and well-being of the community. Our Y strengthens the community while also providing people with opportunity to give back and provide support to their neighbors.
In December 2011, we completed an expansion and remodel that increased our Y to a 63,000 square ft. facility. With this massive expansion, the Mattoon Y now features two gyms (Bock and Neal). With the additional gym we continue to offer youth and adult sports, such as dodgeball, basketball and soccer, while also providing space for open gym time. The spacious Bock Gym provides courts for volleyball, tennis, and pickleball while offering an elevated walking track.
Due to an increase in our membership and program participation, Spring 20015 we added our Wellness Wing. This addition includes a large fitness studio which provides convenient access due to its location in the front of the building. The wing also includes a room for personal training and TRX classes. This addition allows our personal trainers to work with small groups or one-on-one with clients. The TRX classes are another bonus to this room.
Other updates made in 2015 include the Youth Program Room. Once known as the ‘blue’ fitness room, this room now is the home for programs such as Hang Time, Summer Camp and Dynamite Days Out. One additional change was made in 2015 with the expansion of the stretching area in the Sparks Wellness Center. Growing by 60%, the stretching area now allows for more members to work on core, stretching and more.
Our Sparks Wellness Center provides enough equipment for the busiest of seasons. The spacious area includes several pieces of cardio equipment, such as ellipticals, treadmills, bikes and rowing machines along with other popular pieces such as the stairmill, helix and curve. The free weight and strength equipment area offers quite a variety of machines for a complete strengthening program. To familiarize our members with the Wellness Center, we do offer a free Fitness Center Orientation. For those health seekers wanting continued guidance, personal trainers are on staff and available by appointment to design a workout to help individuals reach their fitness goals.
As we now have three fitness studios, our selection of fitness classes has grown over the last few years. Popular programs include kickboxing, Yoga and Zumba®, Les Mills Body Pump™ and our cycling classes. Classes are not limited to the active adult. Programs are available for seniors, toddlers and youth. Visit our Fitness Schedule for a complete list of classes.
If a water workout is more your style, then visit our Lumpkin Family Pool. The 6 lane 25 yard pool ranges from 3.5 to 5 feet in depth. The water temperature is a comfortable 84.5 degrees, perfect for aqua fitness classes, swim lessons and lap swimming. We are proud to offer a competitive swim team, SAMY Seals. Along with other programs, swim team encourages youth to live healthy while building on our Core Values- Respect, Responsibility, Honesty and Caring.
Other areas of interest in our facility include the Rural King Welcome Center, where our friendly staff will provide all the latest information on programming. Stop and sit in our lounge with a cup of coffee while catching up with your workout buddies and if child care is needed, we do offer up to two hours of fun for the kids in our Howell Adams Child Watch. This program is available during our busiest hours for a small fee of $3.
