CERTIFICATION & TRAINING

Whether it’s lifeguards or fitness trainers, Y staff are always well-trained and certified in their field. The Y extends this expertise into the community, collaborating with other organizations such as the American Red Cross to provide trainings and certifications for CPR, first aid, and lifeguarding. Classes are offered throughout the year and are available to the public as well as Y members and staff.

 

Lifeguard Certification Course
This course will give you all the training needed to become an American Red Cross Lifeguard.  Participants must be 15 by the last day of the class and be able to pass all the pre-requisites, as well as perform all the skills with 100% accuracy, and pass written test with 80% accuracy in order to receive certification.  Pre-requisites are as follows: Swim 300 yards continually (freestyle and breaststroke), tread water with no hands for two minutes and swim and retrieve brick at 10ft in time limit.  Class Fee includes: Lifeguarding Book, Pocket Mask, Certification Cards, and Instructors Fees.

Classes are offered throughout the year and times vary.  (Minimum participants 5, Maximum 10) Registration ends one week prior to start date of class.  Class cost is $175.00 for Mattoon Y members and $200 for non-members.  (No refund is given if participant cannot pass pre-requisites).  For the next class dates or more information, contact Jill Rohr, Aquatics Director

Lifeguard Review Course
Challenge course is for those who are looking to renew their current lifeguarding certification and CPR/AED Pro skills.  Participants must have previously held a lifeguarding certification with a lapse of no more than 1 year, and pass all requirements of lifeguard training and pre-requisites.  This is an intense 13 hour review course.  Class cost $75 for Mattoon Y members; $90 for non members.

First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools & the Community
This course includes Adult CPR/AED, Child CPR/AED, Infant CPR and First Aid.  CPR/AED skills include recognizing and caring for breathing and cardiac emergencies and training for proper use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) on a victim of sudden cardiac arrest.  First Aid skills include recognition and care for cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, bleeding, sprains and strains; treating sudden illnesses such as poisonings, heat and cold emergencies, and minimizing the effects of shock.  Participant must accurately demonstrate skills in order to receive certification.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Challenge
Prepares first-responders, lifeguards, and healthcare providers to respond to emergencies as part of job-related duties.  Challenge course is for those who are looking to renew their current certification.  Participants are required to pass written test and accurately demonstrate skills, without review or help.

Classes are offered periodically through the year and times vary.  Registration ends 2 days prior to start date of class.  Class cost is $50.00.
