Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run is an innovative, after school program for girls in 3rd to 5th grade and 6th-8th grades. Over the course of a 10-week season, volunteer coaches teach the girls life-skills such as handling bullies, dealing with body image issues, making healthy decisions and contributing to the community. As a part of the structured lessons, the girls participate in activities to introduce them to the power of running at this pivotal age. The combination of the lessons and running help prepare girls for a lifetime of self respect and healthy living.
This character building program focuses on building self-esteem, confidence and improving physical and emotional health and is open to 15 girls per site. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. If you have a 3rd-8th grade girl in your life who is interested in participating in the program, register online at www.girlsontheruneci.org or call/visit the Mattoon Area Family YMCA-217-234-9494.
Scholarships are available for families in need.
Our spring 2013 season will begin the week of February 11, 2013! Our Girls on the Run 5k, the culminating event of our program will be on Saturday, April 20th and is open to anyone in the community who wants to run, walk or skip thier way to the finish line!
